Choosing Wise Friends

by Emma Right

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.”

Jesus said this in John 15:15. I just love the fact that He, the Creator of the universe, calls us a friend, and puts us on the same plane as Himself.

A good friend, though, is hard to find, and wise is the person who chooses her friends carefully. But finding a good friend is not as easy as it seems. Hindsight is always 20-20.

We’ve all been there–at least some of us who are over 21–revving to grow up, the world at our feet, the stars reachable. Wonderful , wondrous future. But in wanting to get there, we forget to smell the roses, we trample on thorns and we get sorely poked and gashed, and alas, some of the barbs could be poisonous. Except for the Grace that watches over me, over us, all it might have taken for any of us to have taken that wrong path was that detour, that wrong turn, that grabbing of something that looked too good to pass up on. This, coupled with a strong desire to make it in life, might blind any of us, and we can end up grabbing at the adder’s tail.

A true friend can sway a person from the worst decision and a false one can do just the opposite.

So I come to the main point of this devotional and the theme of my story, Dead Dreams, Book 1: without a dream centered on Jesus, our aspirations could be, at best a waste of time, an exercise in futility, and it could even become deadly. Imagine me taking a wrong turn, a detour perhaps, but the turn veered me only, say, ten degrees away from my destination. But if I continue to go down this same direction, if I don’t stop, and ask if I had headed toward a slightly wrong path, I could end up in a place I never meant to be. This is like reading the Bible, too. One faulty frame of reference, or misinterpretation building upon misinterpretation, when reading our Bible, could lead us astray and all sorts of wrong doctrines can seep in. This is not to say the person who made that wrong turn was an unbeliever, of course. I’m just giving an image of how just a slip is all it takes for grave mistakes to follow.

As a mother, I constantly pray that my children will choose their friends wisely. But at the end of the day, if their decision is grounded in Jesus I believe the Holy Spirit will draw them back to the right path, so they won’t end up too far off. I hope that as I point them to Jesus as the answer to all things they will depend on Him more and less on their circumstances, or even their friends. Except if the friend is Jesus, of course.
