What Is Truth?

John 4.23-24

John 4: 23-24 – “But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

If you’ve heard a sermon on worship, this verse was probably mentioned. But how do we worship in spirit? What is truth?

In the Strong’s Greek, spirit is pneuma. It means wind, breath, or spirit. It is the same word used to denote God’s Spirit (or the Holy Spirit).

Here’s how I see it…we have our flesh–soul, mind, body–and our spirit. Our flesh will one day die. It is mortal. Our spirit will live for eternity. It is this spirit, this inward breath, that must worship. It is the essence of who we are. It is our heart’s desire. Our focus.

Matthew 6:21 says, “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” You’ve probably heard it more like this, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (NIV)

Where is your treasure? Your focus? Is it on worship?

And then we wonder, well what is truth? It seems so topsy-turvy in today’s world. One says this is truth, but another says the opposite is truth.

According to BibleHub.com, the word truth here doesn’t just mean true to fact or reality. It’s not just a spoken word. It’s the truth of “idea, reality, sincerity.” It is God’s truth revealed to us.

Truth in today’s world sways with the wind. I’m not even sure some people understand the word anymore. Truth depends on who you believe. Sadly.

But still how do we worship in spirit and truth?

  • With a sincere heart
  • With focus on God
  • forgetting what has happened earlier in the day, the week, the month, the year
  • forgetting the pain
  • not worrying about who’s standing beside you
  • not worrying if you’re making a joyful noise or rivaling the angels with your singing
  • keeping your focus on God during the pastor’s sermon instead of counting ceiling tiles, bricks on the wall, people’s heads, or playing a game on your phone
  • It’s NOT a performance

Worship is not just the few minutes spent singing a few songs. Worship is stopping everything and focusing on God, giving him the respect and regard He is due.

The song, Here I Am to Worship, comes to mind.

Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that you’re my God.
