Mountain Men, Cowboys, and Secrets

Following are three good books I’ve read lately. What have you read and liked?

Leah Townsend, a recently orphaned heiress, flees Richmond after discovering her fiancé’s plot to kill her after their wedding. She needs a safe place to hide, and finds herself accepting a newspaper marriage proposal from a God-fearing young rancher in the Montana Territory. But when Leah arrives at the mountain ranch, she learns her intended husband was killed by a grizzly, leaving behind a bitter older brother and a spunky younger sister.

When Gideon Bryant finds a city girl standing in his log cabin, his first thought is to send her back where she came from. He’s lost too many people to the wild elements of these mountains––his parents, his wife, and now his brother. His love for this untamed land lives on, but he’s determined not to open his heart to another person.

But when an accident forces Leah to stay at the ranch for seven more months, can Gideon protect his heart from a love he doesn’t want? Has Leah really escaped the men who seek her life?

My Review:

While this started with the oft used plot of the girl running from an evil suitor, it quickly switched directions. I loved the unexpected things that worked together to join Leah and Gideon to one another. It’s just the way God works good from those things that seem insurmountably bad.

Holden has never stopped loving Ava Herbert, even though she disappeared just as he was ready to say “I do.” Now Ava is back as the town’s new physical therapist, and this time Holden will do anything to get her to stay.

As Holden seeks to renew their romance, Ava’s guilt grows. She’s never stopped thinking about her first love, but she has a secret that could destroy his feelings for her. When an injury lands the handsome rancher in her office, Ava can’t seem to resist his charms. If she can find the courage to share the truth, they may just have another go-round at happily-ever-after.

My Review:

Is there such a thing as second chances? I’d like to think so, and according to Holden Whitaker, there are, but Ava isn’t as sure. This book touches on lost love found again, but it’s not always easy. Especially when there are secrets.

I enjoyed Arizona Cowboy and highly recommend it.

Janie Dunn’s life changes when, at the request of her dying cousin, she flees with her cousin’s newborn son to protect him from his abusive father. She moves to Kansas, but things take a dire change when her brother is killed. Is a marriage of convenience to kindhearted Aaron Harper the answer to her problems? Is Kansas far enough away from New York that they are safe from the baby’s father?

My Review:

Secrets beget secrets and lies beget lies. Song of the Prairie is a sweet love story about a young woman who has a big secret, which has led to telling lies and keeping even more secrets.

I enjoyed this story, though at times it was both exasperating to see the trouble Janie found herself in and heart-breaking for the same reason.
