Around the Farm – 6/23/14

I have updated the farm report in a while. Spring is always a busy time.

In late April and throughout May we picked an abundance of strawberries and asparagus. I managed to freeze some of the asparagus, but the strawberries were eaten as fast as they were picked. 🙂

In the last few weeks, our garden has started producing. We are getting corn, squash, zucchini, and cucumbers (lots). We’re eating the squash and zucchini, well, the cucumbers too, but I plan to make bread and butter pickles with the lovely green beauties. I don’t eat the pickles, but my husband loves them. We processed the corn on Saturday evening–cutting it off the cob, cooking it slightly in water and butter, and then freezing in 2-3 cup portions. We (my kids and I) put up over 9 qts (19 bags) of corn.

I ate my first tomato yesterday. 🙂

The raspberries took a hit over the winter, so we haven’t been getting many of them, but the blackberries are looking good. We’ve only gotten 10 or 12 berries from them so far, but it looks like we should be getting loads of those in a few weeks.

Also a few weeks ago (I keep going back and forth because I remember the other things we’ve picked), we picked close to 20 qts (4 – 5 qt buckets) of cherries (tart). Most of those went to the chickens — I forgot about them in the fridge. 🙁

We got a few peaches, but we had a late freeze and lost quite a few of those early. The first batch of apples are almost ready to pick, and the blueberries are coming in a bit at a time.

How about where you live? Do you have a garden? What do you plant?

Blessings,

  1. I loved the farm updates and the pictures. I would love to have a farm like yours. I planted a garden 20′ x 30′. It is doing well. I have cabbage, tomatoes, beans, 4 kinds of squash (acorn, butternut, yellow, & zucchini), kale, cucumbers, melon, and peppers. It will be 2 months till harvest. Blessings to you.

    1. Two months seems like a long time, but it will pass quickly, I’m sure. Summer seems to fly by and before I know it, it’s time to prepare for school again. A 20×30 garden is still pretty big. Ours wouldn’t be much bigger than that, except for the corn. We’ve made it much smaller in recent years. It’s too hard to weed otherwise. Next week, I’ll post pictures of the plants and how my husband has them this year. It’s a great time-saver in the weeding department. Blessings back, Elaine.
