Review: Deadly Echoes by Nancy Mehl and Cowgirls Don’t Cry by Debra Lynn Collins

After a youth filled with tragedy and upheaval, Sarah Miller’s life is finally settled with all echoes of the past silent at last. She happily calls Sanctuary her home and spends her days teaching at the local school.

Sarah’s joy at her recent reunion with her sister, Hannah, and meeting the niece she didn’t know she had is too soon interrupted when Deputy Sheriff Paul Gleason informs Sarah her sister has been killed.

As she learns more about Hannah’s death, the circumstances are eerily similar to their parents’ murder. Sarah enlists Paul’s help in digging deeper into the murders the police are dismissing as burglaries gone wrong. Paul’s concern encourages Sarah’s growing feelings for him, but as their investigation peels back the layers of lies almost twenty years old, they get close to uncovering the truth one person will do anything to hide–even if that means coming after the last remaining members of the Miller family.

Review: Who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy? It was hard to tell because Nancy Mehl did such a good job twisting around the “evidence” and the circumstances that the story kept me guessing until the real villain was revealed. While it is categorized as a romantic suspense, there’s not tons of romance. However, this die-hard romance reader enjoyed it just the same.

Sami Lawson’s scars run deep, and she trusts no one. Ever since her mother abandoned her family when she was ten, Sami has watched her father grow cold and bitter from a broken heart.
The one question she cannot shake is: Where is God through all this? To her wounded heart, the only answer she can find is: He is not. As Sami gets to know Chase, her walls start to come down, which frightens her. Can she trust this man who seems so sincere? Or will he abandon her just like her mother did?

After hearing rumors about Sami, Chase Townsend expected a “man-eater” of a woman, especially with a nickname like “Wild Cat.” Instead, he is stunned by the beauty with the sparkling blue eyes.
However, Chase quickly figures out that something has happened to Sami, and he has to decide if he is willing to try to help her overcome her bitterness or if he should just let the “Wildcat” be. Because of Chase’s deep trust in God, and his strong perseverance streak, he makes it his mission to show Sami that God loves her and, only He can heal her broken past.

Now that Chase has made it his business to witness to Sami, he finds himself falling in love. Will his heart be broken when Sami pushes him away?

Review: I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again–I love hunky cowboy heroes. I enjoyed reading Sami’s story as she struggled through pain, unforgiveness, and wrong beliefs about herself and about God. While there are several mistakes (I never could figure out if Stardust was a mare or a gelding), it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment I received from this story. I couldn’t wait to get back to it every time I had to do something else.
