For the Love of Horses

Joanna Hannigan has made a lot of bad choices in her life, but in Where Healing Starts, she discovers she can no longer run from God’s grace. In the middle of her messed up life, she begins to help others and find healing in the process. One of the avenues she uses to help others is by sharing her love of horses.

Adding horses to the story was an obvious choice for me. My older sister and I were avid fans of the animals when we were growing up. Or perhaps my sister was the greatest fan and I followed along to be just like her. Either way, I collected model horses alongside her, went riding with friends and perused the few and far between horse magazines passed along to us by a friend. It was a shoe in that I would eventually find my way onto the back of a horse.

The first horse I rode was a pony. When I was a bit older I rode a horse taller than me. That horse threw me while climbing a hill. My friends took care of the bumps and scratches then made me get back on and ride. It really does help to get back on the horse. Whether literally or figuratively.

I’ve gone many years without being in the saddle, but when my kids were young I arranged horseback riding lessons one summer. My riding was on the trail. Theirs? Around circles in a coral. Not really what my son was interested in. My daughter almost fell off once, but it didn’t faze her.

I enjoyed thinking about horses as I penned this novel. They are magnificent creatures and there is something inspiring about sitting tall in the saddle with the wind in your hair as you ride. One of these days, I’ll have to climb in the saddle again. In the meantime, I’ll let my imagination take me there.

What has been your experience with horses? Have you taken riding lessons? Have you ever shown a horse? Or do you prefer to keep your distance?

I love riding. I miss it a lot, but lack of time and horses causes me to not be able to ride at the moment. 🙁  Maybe one day soon.

Happy reading,
