Food in Our Lives by Cecelia Dowdy

cdowdy-5Cecelia Dowdy has been an avid reader since she learned to string letters together to form words. While pursuing a business degree in college one of her professors tried to convince her to get an English degree since he felt she was a great writer. Years later, after receiving her BS in Finance, she took her former teacher’s advice, and started pursuing her literary career. She loves to read, write, and bake delicious desserts during her spare time. She also loves visiting new places and listening to old tunes with her husband. Currently she resides with her spouse and young son in Maryland.

Food in Our Lives

by Cecelia Dowdy

Do you think we let food control our lives?

I find that people, especially women, will worry about their weight and their diet. It’s a constant subject of discussion, and many women will avoid sweets because of the fattening calories that are contained in those decadent desserts.

Seeing glossy magazines with skinny models doesn’t really help matters much. Most women don’t look like that. I also see mannequins in stores that look like extremely thin women. Perhaps the clothing industry is getting a clue, though. When I was out shopping with my sister recently, we noticed that there were some mannequins in one store that actually looked like a regular/average-sized person! We were shocked. We’d never seen a mannequin with a slightly rounded tummy and firm, slightly large thighs.

In my novel, Raspberry Kisses, food is frequently mentioned throughout the story.

Raspberry Kisses is partially set in a Maryland bakery. After her husband’s untimely death, 25-year old Rhea Morrison opens up her own bakery. Working in the warm kitchen, providing sweet treats to her patrons, gives Rhea a sense of purpose and helps her to deal with her grief. She loves making new recipes and she also enjoys seeing her customers enjoy her different sweet treats. Rhea also enjoys eating food, and is easily upset when others will hold back, not indulging in foods that they may need to stay healthy.

I find that people will sometimes turn to food for comfort. When Rhea feels that all is lost between her and Martin (the hero), she bakes a chocolate cake and feasts on four slices during the course of the day. She feels their breakup is imminent, and the sweet chocolate flavor brings her a bit of comfort amidst her pain.

Although Rhea will eat food for comfort, there are others in Raspberry Kisses who eat food in the opposite manner. Rhea’s twin sister Raven has been in a bad car accident. She resists eating certain foods because she doesn’t want to gain weight since she can no longer exercise (temporarily) due to her injuries.

Rhea also has a sister-in-law, Mary. Mary is the sister of Rhea’s deceased husband, Stan. Mary has been treated for anorexia in the past, and whenever life gets hectic for her, spinning out of control, her anorexia flares up, and she takes charge of her hectic life by minimizing what she eats. Rhea is puzzled as to why Mary refuses to eat, yet, Mary makes sure her cat is well-fed. Rhea does her best to help her sister-in-law while she goes through a difficult time.

So, what’s your relationship like with food? Do you eat certain foods for comfort? Do you often abstain from certain foods? Do you feel as if you’ve spent half of your life on a special diet?

  1. This sounds like a delicious book! 🙂 Comfort food. I know some people turn to food this way, but when I’m upset, food is the last thing I want. Now, when I’m in between books and at loose ends, now that’s another thing. Then anything chocolate will do.
