Character name and role: Devree Malone – Heroine

What traits do you most admire or dislike in others?

My sister is so tough. Nothing makes her squeamish. I wish I could be more like her. Especially since I’m living on her dude ranch in the middle of nowhere with mice, skunks, cows, and a mean rooster.

What is your deepest, most closely held secret?

The reason I want to get out of wedding planning and become an event planner. Last year, I had a boyfriend. I thought we were getting pretty serious. Until I met with a new client to plan her wedding. Her groom to be turned out to be my boyfriend. I am so done with weddings.

How do you feel about marriage?

I know there are good men out there. My dad is my hero and he and mom are still crazy about each other. My sister is happily married to a great guy. But after my rude awakening from Randall, I’ve given up on men. I’ll never give another one a chance.

Do you have a personal relationship with the Lord?

I’m kind of mad at him. I never got to spend time with my parents when I was a kid because they always had to stay at their Christian book store. I know it sounds childish, but God stole my time with them. And since I’ve been here at the dude ranch, my sister has made me go to church. But seeing how she consistently leans on God, even through her stillbirth last year, I’m beginning to wonder if I need him too.

  1. Devree sounds like a person “protesting too much”. It will be interesting to read how she accepts her need for God!
    Blessings!

    1. I finally parted with those hiking boots, Jenny. I kept them for a long time for memory’s sake, but I have a picture. For those who don’t know, Jenny and I went to a local writers’ retreat. I had no idea there was a nature walk and was unprepared. But I went on the walk anyway, which included climbing a mountain in my gold wedge sandals. Forever known as my hiking boots.
