Interview with Norma Kimbell

the heroine of The Disappearing Ship,
in The Great Lakes Lighthouse Brides novella collection

What is your deepest, most closely held secret?

I feel defeated. My father encouraged me to follow my dream to become a woman doctor, and I reached the goal of graduating from medical school. In shame, I left the practice where I worked because no one would allow me to treat them, neither men nor women.

What do you value the most?

My independence, but I had to recognize that it was no longer an option for me.

Who do you most admire, and why?

Since my father died before that happened, my only recourse was to return to the Whitefish Point Lighthouse on Lake Superior. My uncle was the Lighthouse Keeper, and he and my aunt were the most important people in my life at that time. They had helped finish rearing me after both my parents were gone.

How do you feel about your occupation?

It was the only thing I’d ever wanted to do with my life. Now I had no purpose.

How do you feel about marriage?

Of course, I wanted to marry sometime, but I wanted to practice my profession before that happened.

Do you have a personal relationship with the Lord?

Yes, I loved the Lord, but I wondered why He let me go to medical school and graduate with honors, but didn’t enable me to practice.

Has it changed? Why?

Yes. The plans He had for me were for my good, and He knew the end from the beginning.

More about The Disappearing Ship:

Romance and mystery collide at Whitefish Point Lighthouse when unemployed doctor Norma Kimbell and Drake Logan, owner of a steamship line, search for evidence of a supposed shipwreck.
