Author Interview with Rachel Skatvold

What do you like to read?

My book genre tastes are kind of eclectic. I started loving to read in middle school and the first book I remember falling in love with was The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen because it was full of adventure and suspense. Now, I still read adventure packed stories but also love Christian romance, especially historical. Janette Oak and Stephanie Grace Whitson are two of my favorite authors. Their stories warm my heart and teach life lessons about faith.

I’m glad I’m not the only eclectic reader out there. I cut my teeth on mysteries, but love fantasy, supernatural, and romance of almost all types. Tell us about a typical day in your house.

As a homeschooling mom and writer, my day is a little unpredictable but I try my best to keep a schedule. We usually have most of our school work done in the morning and then take a break for lunch. We finish up around three and while the kids have free time, I have some time to write before dinner. However, most of my writing ends up getting done after everyone else has gone to bed. I’m a bit of a night owl.

Life is definitely unpredictable as a homeschool mom. Your schedule sounds a lot like mine, except I write early in the morning before anyone gets up. When did you first begin writing?

I have always had a big imagination and have loved writing since childhood. My mom still has a large collection of my little stapled books. However, I never considered publishing a book until college. I had an idea for a Christian romance and ultimately decided to pursue a degree in English to sharpen my writing skills. Being an author and stay-at-home mom is my dream job.

Tell us about your latest book.

My latest book is called Guardian of Her Heart. It is a standalone book in the Whispers in Wyoming Series, telling the story of Charlotte. She leaves her home in London to be the guardian for her niece and help run her sister’s horse training business. There, she meets Trevor, who co-owns the business and has plans that conflict with her own. Can two hearts join to save a legacy?

About Guardian of Her Heart:

Charlotte Lewis has the life she always dreamed of in London.

Her low profile career and private flat allow her to hide in plain sight, away from the paparazzi obsessed with her famous Hollywood family. Unlucky in love, she is content to live alone, until a tragic accident leaves her the guardian of her eight-year-old niece, Emma, and co-owner of Morgan Stables in Wyoming. With no experience in raising children or caring for horses, Charlotte knows one thing. She desperately needs help.

After losing his wife to cancer, Trevor Morgan’s faith is shattered. Living in solitude and training horses for his cousin, Tom, allows him to hide his grief. However, inheriting half of Morgan Stables gives Trevor’s life new purpose. He longs to preserve his family’s legacy and watch over his honorary niece, but Tom’s fancy, uptight sister-in-law complicates his plans. Can they learn to put their differences aside for Emma’s sake and the future of Morgan Stables?
